Pitcher filters should be replaced every 40 gallons (about 2 months for the average family) The porduct itself is great. A real savings on wasted plastic and money! The price it the best here after shopping around and the more you buy the better the deal. Replacement filters for my Brita pitcher always seem to be too expensive, but this three pack is a great deal even compared to the larger filter packs. The filters make my tap water taste great and it's much easier than buying bottled water. I recommend these filters. For those who gave up bottled water but want better taste than tap, Brita filtered water is a good option. In most places the 3-packs are way overpriced and the 10-packs are hard to find. Costco carries them but otherwise I have only found them online. As each one should be replaced in 2 months, this is nearly 2 years worth of filters. If you have a friend who also uses Brita, get the 10-pack and split the cost. (The box contains 2 boxes of 5 filters each, so there isn't even any fooling around with opening packaging). Gives each person 1 year's worth of filters at a decent per-filter price. p.s. My only beef with Brita (Clorox-owned now)is that the filters are not recyclable. Supposedly the filters the company sells in Europe have been modified to be recyclable. They should do that here too. we live in Phoenix AZ where the water is hard&tastes bad. we use the large 'counter top' water cooler and these Brita filters take all of the minerals&bad taste out of the water. if only we could get the restaurants to use these filters, it would be great! After using the brita pitcher,I found out that I didn't have to live with bad tasting water anymore. The Brita did just what it said. Thanks Amazon for the best buy on the filters!! Easy to use and fun. This really works. I usually do not like fancy gadgets, but this thing works. If you struggle with opening a bottle of wine - trust me you will be happy with this product. The Oster wine opener was given to me as a gift from my son and his wife. They knew I was having trouble with my hands and wrists due to my carpal tunnel and this was the perfect gift for me. I have been so pleased with the ease of use and the flawless removal of the corks. No more struggling to get the corks out. I used to think the Rabbit was great, but after my hands started hurting, even the Rabbit was too hard to use. The Oster solved my problem and now I can open my own bottles again! I am an artist and I recycle my corks into art pieces. The Oster wine opener removes the corks cleanly and it does not tear up the cork as other openers are apt to do. If you are looking for a great gift for a wine enthusiast - this is definitely it!! Wine lovers best friend - makes opening wine bottles easy and works great for hands suffering from Arthritis. Instructions say to cut the bottle wrap surrounding the cork, but this works without having to do that extra step. Amazing value for the low price! There is no big piece of hardware to haul out of the cupboard, no stress to your elbow, no body parts to put at risk. You just stand comfortably and push a button. Voila, here comes the cork out of the bottle. Push the button again and the cork is released. I charge mine about once a week. It is fun, easy and takes up very little space. Easily moved to an outside table, or bar b q area. Especially good for seniors or anyone with compromised strength in their hands or arms. Manufacturer:Hansgrohe Description: This electric wine opener (4207-6WC) offers effortless entertainment at the touch of a button. In fact, it sucks so hard that it can be a tad hard to maneuver. I find the on\off switch on the top very, very tight, but I think the machine is just put together well! Eureka 71B Hand-Held Vacuum I wonder if the reviewer whose machine stopped right away just received an anomaly - a bad machine that should have been returned. I don't know if Eureka is a problematic warranty guarantor and I hope I never have to find out. I have had mine for a while and it is STILL going strong. Overall, if you want outstanding hand-held suction, this Eureka 71B hand-held (or the Black&Decker CycloPro) will do the deed! Black&Decker CCV900 CycloPro Corded Hand Vac Pro. suction power is strong, easy to use, brush can stir dust and help clean, basically, a good product Con. if possible, a new design could consider this, while using this on carpet floor, many times it becomes hard to move forward or backward if carpet is newer, I have to push with both hands, the right hand behind the product, bear the hot wind and have to shut it down every 30 minutes. The handle should be placed not on top but on top of back, and hot wind vent may re-routed to lower position. Place the handle in back top can also help women user easier to operate this small device. I am a man with 220 pounds, it is still difficult for me to operate it sometimes. 2 handles may be better than just 1. Think about this. I have a long haired dog and cat. I'm pregnant and can't very easily use a full size vacume on my stairs. I tried to use my hands to keep it picked up, but I couldn't keep up--the pet hair was making the stairs slippery, dangerous and dirty. So, I broke down and bought this little vac. It works great. I like the flip on the front for the brushes--it makes the vertical part of the vacuming really easy. It works great at picking up the pet hair--it works better than my full size does! I can't think of any downsides so far. It is really easy to use. I agree with all the positives that so many people are raving about with this vacuum. I won't try to recap them all, but I don't see mentioned that this vac is also rather quiet for the power, especially compared to a Dirt Devil, which in my experience are painfully loud. It would get five stars from me, except that this is the age of the cyclonics, and I would love to have all the features of this vac without so much reliance on the dust cap for first stage filtration. I've used this one for just a few weeks, and I feel like I already need to order new filters, even though I brush it off thoroughly every time I empty the canister. If Eureka offers a similar vac in a cyclonic, I'll probably buy it and put this one on ebay. My daughter and I both have allergies, I bought this Vacuum to do areas a normal vacuum can't reach. I was appalled by the amount of dander and heavens knows what this little vacuum picked up off our mattresses. I now use it once a week and every week it cleans just as well. Our sneezing and itching at night has gotten better ! Hand-held but very powerful, this Eureka model eliminates the hassle of lugging around a full-size vacuum for cleaning car upholstery, sofas, and carpeted stairs. A long 20-foot cord (which wraps for storage) provides good reach, as does the deluxe hose that stretches to three times its length. With the crevice tool on the end of the hose, this vacuum reaches into all kinds of tight places. And, with two motors, one to power the revolving brush and one for suction, the 5.5 amp vacuum cleans deeply. One of Eureka's innovations is the Riser Visor, a clear plastic cover that stays down for cleaning horizontal surfaces and flips up so the revolving brush can reach the vertical carpet on stair risers. There's no bag to change, just a filter and clear plastic dust cup to shake out when necessary.--Ann Bieri "QUICK UP" HAND VACUUM Hand-held but very powerful, this Eureka model eliminates the hassle of lugging around a full-size vacuum for cleaning car upholstery, sofas, and carpeted stairs. SO glad I bought it......Thanks. This product was given as a gift and the recipient was happy with the content. This is a fun DVD to get that has all of the great, and a few of the weird, Michael Jackson videos. The Scene Selection view doesn't list all of the videos, but just so you know, Thriller is on there -- immediately following the Bad video. The DVD quality is not very good. For most videos it has a dotted white line at the top of the screen. But if you're buying to remember a time Michael Jackson was a fun/interesting artist with definiltey the BEST music video in history (Thriller), then its worth the money. Don't expect high quality, but do expect some fun. Michael Jackson is king and this is very good evidence of that fact. It's cool because it's got the long versions of Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel and Black and White. But the coup de gras is certainly the follow-up to this; HiStory Vol. 2, as it has all the videos from the HiStory sessions (ie. Earth Song, They Don't Care About Us, Stranger In Moscow, Childhood, You Are Not Alone) as well as the Blood on the Dance Floor video. You can't lose with either of these DVDs though. He's an amazing talent. I ordered this DVD for my 4 year old nephew who is a huge "MJ" fan!!!! The DVD is great and contains all his hits and extended versions of I'm Bad and Thriller. The major parts of the cd I disagree with however is that she gives some bad advice, and sometimes doesn't give advice at all when it's needed. She doesn't properly explain what you need to do in order to hit the higher notes in the warmups, and she also tells you on numerous occasions that you need to essentially tense up your stomach in order to hit some of the warmups. This is bad advice as singing should come naturally and you should be in a relaxed state. Other than this it is a pretty decent cd. The CD is really good and as a bonus includes a few lessons of breathing exercises. The only thing I dislike is that, when you hear it everyday, you found a little bit anoying, the comments of the teacher over the piano sound you are suppose to sing. Also sometimes she speak really fast and loud. But maybe is just my point of you after many listens. I've wanted to sing for as long as I can remember, but never could afford voice lessons. I've recently invested in about 5 different vocal CDs to see if I could help myself learn a bit. Out of all the ones I purchased, this is by far my favorite and most used CD. I found the exercises to be simple, and Ariella explains everything before you attempt it. Some of the "visualizations" she gave before the exercises helped me a great deal. I especially liked the breathing exercises, very helpful. Some vocal CDs just go through the exercise once and then expect you to be able to do it, but sometimes you like to know WHY the particular exercise is useful for vocal development. Don't worry, she doesn't go overboard with explaining though. The most important thing to keep in mind is to stay in your personal comfort zone. Everyone is at different levels of vocal development, so you must never strain to reach a note that you don't feel comfortable hitting. Ariella covers this in the intro. She cannot tell if you are straining or pushing, so you have to be the judge of what your body is telling you. Another thing to keep in mind is you don't have to try to be powerful when doing these exercises! I know that Ariella sounds loud over the piano when she is going through the exercises but I find it's the best to stay at a speaking level or softer. Just make sure you are comfortable, and don't try to push because you think you have to do these loudly. I find it counter-productive to try to do that. Do what works for you. I recommend this CD for both people who are starting out and for those who already know how to sing but are just looking for a warm-up CD or a refresher. Of course nothing compares to a vocal coach that can assess your voice and give you specialized vocal lessons, and there is no magic CD that cures all your vocal problems, but this is definitely worth buying if you want to better your voice, no matter what level you're at. As a professional musician/singer, I am always interested in vocal exercises and teaching techniques. I found Ariella Vaccarino's CD, Voice Lessons To Go, to be informative, relevant and fun. I would recommend this CD to beginning vocal students who want an introduction to voice technique as well as professional vocalists who want to add new exercises to their current repertoire. Sorry to disagree with so many positive reviews, but I found this CD of very little value. I can see where some might find it useful for warming up the voice, but even then the speed of the exercises precludes thoughtful placement and proper breathing. As a beginner looking for help in improving my breathing and volume, I found virtually nothing helpful here. As an addition to other voice exercises maybe it's useful, but if you have not had voice training before, this CD will not help develop proper technique. I finally resorted to finding a voice teacher and have never looked back. Join the thousands of singers who use Voice Lessons To GO! Voice Lessons To Go is a great way to get going on your singing voice. Vocalize and Breath is the first of Ariella Vaccarino's successful four volume series. Whether just beginning or as an addition to the work you have done. Now there is no excuse not to practice and improve because this CD makes it so convenient and easy. Vocalize and Breath consists of a half hour of vocal warms ups, then fantastic breathing exercises, and finally excellent advice on posture and training. You will be guided through the exercises with vocal examples and piano accompaniment by Ariella Vaccarino an excellent experienced voice teacher and professional singer from Los Angeles. Ariella's explanations are clear and easy to follow. Developing your singing voice no longer has to be just for people trying to make a career with their voice, or those with disposable income who can afford private lessons. The weekly price for voice lessons averages $45-150 an hour depending on your city. Who is this CD for? Singers, Actors, Dancers- This is an inexpensive way for the struggling artist to get and keep their voices in shape. Teenagers - Whether you are watching American Idol with pangs of desire to be on there, sing loudly along with your favorite pop stars, are trying out for the school musical, or dreaming of singing at the MET some day. People who struggling singing- There are those out there who feel, (it could be true or not) that they can't sing and are embarrassed when they have to be heard by others. This is an excellent private way to improve your singing with out having to deal with embarrassment or shyness. This CD will increase your abilities and confidence. Adults- Always singing in your car, shower, or doing Karaoke? -but just are not willing or able to shower yourself with private lessons yet. These CDs give you a private way of improving your confidence. It is a nice blend of classical and contemporary. I used it for a friend's wedding and we were all very pleased with it. I am in the process of selecting music for my daughter's wedding and wanted to listen to a variety of music. This CD provided that for me. Now I have a better idea what selections we will use through the ceremony. I bought this CD hoping to find some background music for my wedding reception and (fingers crossed) ceremony. While the music and recordings are high-quality and the cd does sound great, it sounds a little "father-of-the-bride." It sounds a little like the kind of music that would be the stereotypical background music in a movie about weddings. Much of the tracks are 4 piece string quartet and, because of this, it lends itself to a more traditional wedding ambience. I recommend this piece for anyone looking for purely traditional, and possibly stereotypical wedding music. If you want something more upbeat, I recommend anything by Michael Buble or standards like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. A Day to Remember - Instrumental Music for Your Wedding Day More of what I needed to complete my job as a DJ! Great Choices! Quite likely, anyone looking at this CD will be either organizing a wedding or getting married anyway. This is the first wedding CD I bought and while I like a few of the songs, it has given me more ideas for more. Some of the music can be used elsewhere too, including photo slideshows, dinner preludes, etc so it's not a waste of money. There's an insert with more CDs and Music ideas as well. After performing at more than 200 weddings, Tim and Ryan O'Neill recorded this beautiful CD of favorite wedding songs. It features a full hour of instrumental piano, string quartet, flute, and guitar music that can be played at your ceremony or reception. It also gives suggestions for music at your wedding, including a special bridal website! IT MAKES US REALIZE HOW THE NATIVE AMERICANS WERE TREATED WHEN WE TOOK OVER THIS LAND OF OURS. TWO PEOPLE COME TOGETHER TO FIND THIS LOST TRIBE AND THEY FALL IN LOVE IN THE PROCESS. BREATH TAKING SCENERY AND A GREAT STORY. i purchased this movie after owning the vhs copy of the movie i also had purchased the dvd previously and loaned it out but it was not returned to me so i repurchased it i have watched this movie numerous times and will continue to do so. This review is based upon the VHS version, as the DVD version needs to be re-released so all can afford to enjoy the movie in the wide-screen format. As a former professor of Native American Studies, I have been asked numerous questions about this thought provoking, well photographed (although I wish they would actually film movies about Montana, in Montana), and touchingly portrayed movie. After reading many of the reviews, including the editorial reviews, I find myself compelled to write my own review; and have waited this long only in hopes of viewing the DVD version first. But, after two years of unanswered letters to the production company requesting that the movie be re-released, I purchased the VHS version. To the best of my knowledge, the primary difference, which is unfortunate, is that the VHS version is full screen. First off, I can not comment on what the producers/director/writer were thinking or intending to accomplish with this film; I can only comment on what I think about the film as I view it. And, as such, let me start by stating that the movie is NOT ABOUT Cheyenne Indians, Dog Soldiers, bounty hunters, or Montana. The movie IS NOT a western, a historical film, a cinema that "pours 'Dances with Wolves' syrup into some parallel copy cat fashion, or an escapist adventure. What the movie IS, as stated to those listening, is a modern day legend; a fanciful, romantic tale told in "campfire" tradition. The movie IS a story being told--not acted out or portrayed--to the viewer; it IS AN ORAL tradition, rendered in cinematic format. As an oral story, then, the "irritating, tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story (it wasn't)," is in fact an intrinsic component of the movie experience: the viewer is listening to the story teller and imagining the story in their mind. Equally important, the story teller tells us--the listener/viewer--that the events may or may not be so (i.e., true). It is from this context--of, what if it were true--that the content of the tale opens up to juxtaposing history and wishfulness into one beautiful, touching story. In the tale of the "Last of the Dogmen," Lewis Gates (Tom Berenger's character) is repeatedly described in reviews as a bounty hunter, which clearly is not the case. I can only suppose that the fact that Gates is being hired (or that Dr Lillian Sloan (Barbara Hershey's character) sarcastically calls him a bounty hunter), somehow implies this, but anyone paying attention to the story can see that he is given a badge and Gates is an experienced back country guide (for which Montana has many such men and women). Such individuals are frequently part of search and rescue operations, and, when required, paid well for their work. I find Berenger's portrayal as such a person very accurate, and true of the one or two I personally know. As for the "Oxbow" region of Montana, I can only suppose that this is a quirky reference to the "Oxbow Incidence," and the use of the term to refer to a "U" shape bend in a river. Based upon other comments in the movie, I must assume that the movie is supposed to take place from the western part of Glacier National Park (where Logan Pass is located) to the Kootenai Forest; while the town of Yaak, Montana, could be the town portrayed in the movie. Are there rugged parts of Montana where few people go? Yes--especially the region I just described. Can someone hide there for long periods of time? Yes; just look at Biathlon World Championship Kari Swenson's story ("Abduction" (aka The Abduction of Kari Swenson) (VHS Tape - 1989); or 'Mountain men' case captured national attention, By GAIL SCHONTZLER, (Bozeman, Montana) Chronicle Staff Writer). However, the character I most related to--and I suppose why so many ask me about the movie--is Dr Lillian Sloan (Barbara Hershey's character). Her love and respect (yes, I was disgusted with the fact that she was in charge of an archaeological "dig") for Native American cultures is nothing less than a reflection of myself. Is everything she states accurate? NO. Accuracy, in true non-Native American "campfire" tradition, is surrendered to what sounds best. Then again, without this bending of the truth, the premise of the tale is lost: survivors of the Massacre at Sand Creek "escaped" to northwestern Montana (which Hershey's character fairly well summarizes; also, see my review of "Soldier Blue" for comments on this massacre). Again, this is a "trick" of campfire tales: in 1864, there were literally only a few hundred non-Native Americans living in Montana, not the other way around! Moreover, there were no Dog Soldiers (a fraternal/men's social organization found among the Cheyennes and other tribes--although Wikipedia claims they were a band) at Black Kettle's encampment at Sand Creek; nor was Lone Wolf, a revered TRIBAL--not band--leader, present at the Sand Creek Massacre in southeast Colorado. To answer a question raised in another review, Dog Soldiers did not "pin" themselves to be the last one's fighting (as suggested by Hershey's character, Dr Sloan), BUT frequently acted as a rear guard during moves. In fact, there were many survivors at Sand Creek (but all were Southern Cheyenne/Arapaho Indians, not Northern Cheyenne--who reside in southeast Montana), not just a few as alleged by Dr Sloan (Hershey's character) in the movie. There was another men's society, frequently referred to as Contraries, that did "pin" themselves to be the last one(s) fighting (which is alluded to in the movie during Gate's dream), but they were as rare as they have become colorful in stories. Dog Soldiers--most likely because of their name--have been stereotyped by the media for centuries, as as such are a convenient group to tell stories about. To the movie's credit (albeit, mistakenly so most likely), they use the name Dogmen instead of Dog Soldiers. Lastly, I did not find Dr Lillian Sloan's (Barbara Hershey's character) interest in the Cheyenne to be "swooning over the 'noble savages'." I find her actions to be just what I would do, given the chance to find myself back in time when traditions were unchanged by European influences. Nor do I feel that the portrayal of the Cheyennes is stereotypical or romantic. While the movie, like all movies, has flaws that detract from the film, Hershey and Berenger give wonderful performances, and the movie is one that will stand the test of time as a great form of entertainment, that can be watched over and over (hopefully on DVD soon). As one final note, I would welcome any questions concerning the Cheyennes, one of four Native American nations I have studied for over 30 years. Update--1 July 2008: If this review was not helpful to you, I would appreciate learning the reason(s) so I can improve my reviews. My goal is to provide help to potential buyers, not get into any arguments. So, if you only disagree with my opinion, could you please say so in the comments and not indicate that the review was not helpful. Thanks. What a delight it was viewing this movie! the characters came across as genuine people you might actually know. The scenery was breathtaking. The story realistic yet fanciful. I've often driven through certain regions of the U.S. and imagined the lost Indian tribes that inhabited them. This movie brought my imagining to life. A hidden band of Cheyenne Indians still living as their ancestors did well over 100 years ago. It's "Lost Horizons" and "Brigadoon" of the native American world. I love the outdoors, but must live in the real world to make a living. This movie provides an escape into today's wildnerness in which one is able to meet face to face Indians as they once lived. A bit fanciful and escapist, but heck, isn't that what you want when you view a movie? Despite an irritating, tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story (it wasn't),Last of the Dogmenis actually a very moving and magical film. Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist (Barbara Hershey) search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s. What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world. ADances with Wolvesparallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in, butLast of the Dogmenstands up just fine without comparison to any other films. As in Kevin Costner's Oscar-winning movie, however, there are ways in which this film captures a similar sense of yearning, mystery, and loss.--Tom Keogh Rerations < Last of the Dogmen > < The Last of His Tribe > < Dreamkeeper > < In Pursuit of Honor > < Geronimo - An American Legend > freaks < Pete's Dragon > < Bedknobs and Broomsticks (30th Anniversary Edition) > < Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Full Screen Edition) > < The Sword in the Stone (Disney Gold Classic Collection) > < The Rescuers > < Puff the Magic Dragon > price:Walt Disney Video(1993-10-27) customer 's review (wonderful family movie!!!) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (um.... As a child I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and watched it so many times that the tape wore out. Watching it now I realize that although it is a good movie it is a bit too long for a children's movie. I also won't purchase it as some of the songs are just a but much... as a previous reviewer pointed out the lyrics to one of the opening songs just don't fly in my house. "Gonna snag him, gag him, drag him through town. Put his head in the river, let the pup drown, Trap him, strap him, wrap him in a sack. Yeah! Tie him screaming to a railroad track. Gonna paw him, claw him, saw him in half, When he cries out for mercy we'll just laugh, Beat him, heat him, eat him for dessert. Yeah! Roast him gently so the flames won't hurt." And having to explain intoxication to a small child just isn't my cup of tea. It is a fun movie otherwise, and I'll probably borrow it again when the kids are older and and just fast forward through that particular song. Because of this I can only rate it 3 stars, and not the 4 I would otherwise give it. I enjoyed the movie Pete's Dragon by Disney and will purchase more items from this seller. my kids like petes dragon when they were little, so i bought it for my grand daughter-hoping she likes it as much. Musicals always caught my attention when I was younger, specifically the Muppet Christmas Carol. After that I did not want to see another movie-musical, but then I accidently came across Pete's Dragon. Needless to say after I saw on TV I rented it and watched it at least 5 more times. The next time it was on TV I recorded. To this day I still love this movie. It is a humorous and interesting film. Here, no one believed that Pete had a dragon, but indeed the dragon was real. This is a great film for kids who are young and have a very vivid imagination. I remember I wanted to be a power ranger when I was younger. Children can relate their dreams and fantasies with Pete. For adults, this movie still holds up extremely well. It is pretty funny with an all star cast of Mickey Rooney and Red Buttons. Charlie Calice also performs the voice of Pete's Dragon. As far as I'm concerned, Calice provided no more sound effects than Chewbaca in Star Wars, just the occassional moan and groan here and there. Shelly Winters also plays a great role as one of the Gogans, who is trying to retain possession of Pete after he ran away. All she wants to do is use him for hard labor. However, Pete is taken in by a father and a daughter who own a lighthouse. They watch after Pete and later protect him from the Gogans. The first song is simply amazing and the movie never falls from the standard it starts with. Disney loved to mix live action with animation (Mary Poppins,Bedknobs and Broomsticks), but this 1977 effort falls on its face. The turn-of-the-century story concerns an orphaned boy whose only friend is a cartoon monster. While the latter is entertainingly rendered, the rest of the film strains to be enchanting and the cast overreaches in a big way. I just purchased this for my husband and the transaction went very smoothly and the video was in great shape Purple People Eater (Linda Shayne, 1988) There are bad movies, and then there are bad movies. There are those that transcend the usual badness and become gems of such pure awfulness that they must be seen to be believed. Night of the Lepus is the classic example, because who thought giant mutant killer bunnies were a good idea? Purple People Eater is another entry in that august company, a movie that goes so far down the scale of awful that it starts lookin' like up to me. It helps that, in the light of hindsight, so many of the kids in this movie went on to be the deeply dysfunctional child stars they promised to be here. The plot: Billy Johnson (Doogie Howser M.D.'s Neil Patrick Harris)'s parents are going away for the summer, leaving him and his sister Molly (American Beauty's Thora Birch in her first screen appearance) in the care of their hard-of-hearing, slightly loopy grandfather (Ned Beatty). While they repaint grandpa's apartment, they pull out an old record player and play Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater," causing the title character to appear, looking, as purple people eaters do, for work in a rock and roll band. Meanwhile, Grandpa's landlord, Mr. Noodle, is continually raising the rents in the neighborhood so he can drive everyone out and turn the whole place into condos. Purple to the rescue! This is a train wreck of a movie, but like a good train wreck, it's one you simply can't stop watching. The plot and structural holes are painfully funny, the acting is godawful, the script is a mess, and, wow, Dustin Diamond as the guitarist! (As a side note, one of the things that really bugs me in movies makes its presence very highly felt here: the director obviously didn't care enough to have the people playing the instruments even come close to synching with the music.) But before you get your hate on, this movie is chock full of the kinds of awful lines you'll be repeating as in-jokes amongst your hip friends for years to come. "No, Longfellow! Not the balcony!" I picked up this blu-ray figuring I would watch this over and over. I WILL NOT! Absolutely the worst "Director's Cut" ever. They completely changed the story line and eliminated several characters. The new version is awful! DO NOT BUY THIS BLU-RAY!! This version of the film over the "Directors cut" is like talking about some idiot doing a Directors cut of Indiana Jones. The first one is far, far better then some ego manic, (Helgeland and Gibson) trying to pull a movie out of the water because they thought it may be a mar on their Resume. The new DC is bad, and when I say Bad, I honestly mean, horrid! It is disjointed, there is little if any character development, let alone story line. All in all the Directors Cut is a Waste of your Money and Time. It isn't even worth the time you may spend watching it, because if you never saw the first one, you'll just sit there and scratch your head and wonder how this was ever released! With all of the good things I have to say about the DC version, the original version is everything the opposite! The first one is dark, scary, and shows a side of old Mel that no one expects. Honestly, his first real stretch as a character. It is a decent movie, not great, but worth owning, and seeing! If you are like me you get sick of seeing all of this Hollywood monkey men play the same role year after year; Mel, Tom Hanks, etc....Only to have them do a conceptually interesting movie and have Hollywood shoot it down, because America didn't accept it! At least guys like Bruce Willis and Johnny Depp continue to take stretches in their roles, and interestingly enough, they continue to pay off. So if you want Vanilla, you know where it is, but if you want yours crunchy, look around, you'll find it! All in all, Buy the first Version, not the Directors cut, at least with the first version, you will get to see what H-Wood could do, if they didn't try to pander to the masses. Oh and by the way, the Directors cut gets a solid 1 Star rating. There are two versions of this film, the original, and the newly-released 'Director's Cut.' If you saw this movie before, in the theatre or on cable, and want it for your own, DO NOT BUY the Director's Cut. The plot is completely different, ends abruptly, and does not create the Porter character that was in the original. Kris Kristofferson, the boxing match, the kid in the limo, the toes, the blown-up apartment...none of that's in it. Here, the money arrives at a subway station in a back-pack, and Porter has a shoot-out with a twenty-something chick that had the voice of Kathleen Turner on an earlier phone call with Devane's character, when Porter 'meets' with him. That meeting is where it really runs off the rails. Best Buy has pulled the original, not even listed in their stock anymore. Get the good version before all that's left is the second, anemic, 'Director's Cut' version. Okay, so I made a mistake. I wanted a not so expensive blu-ray disc to test my PS3 capability. And since Payback is quite an excellent movie, I thought I'd try this one. Wrong. This version is not better than the previous one. Its inserts make the main character slightly less likable. The ending sucks. And the format is not 16:9, which kinda defeats the whole purpose of up-scaling (since that apparently leads to down-sizing). Big mistake. They destroyed the 1999 version, which is much better. I but director's cut thinking that I would get more, but I got less, it is like 11 minutes of less movies and change characters and removed interesting scenes. There were reasons writer-director Brian Helgeland's cut ofPaybackwas dismissed by distributors Paramount and Warner Bros., then heavily re-shot and re-tooled by Mel Gibson's production company, Icon Entertainment. Those reasons are explained in detail by Gibson, Helgeland, and others in the special features ofPayback: The Director's Cut (Special Collector's Edition). Among them: Helgeland's version was too dark. America wasn't ready in 1999 to see Gibson play an unapologetic, 1970s-style antihero who might not get exactly what he wants. Audiences didn't have the patience to wait for answers to their story questions. A dog dies. (A big no-no.) All of these comments make sound, practical sense. But here's the bottom line: Helgeland's cut, perhaps even a bit more disciplined and taut (according toPayback's editor, Kevin Stitt) than it was in 1999, is a serious movie with an organic tone and logic that makes the film look the way it was meant to look: as a neo-noir film for adults. The theatrical release ofPayback, by contrast, was and is silly and vulgar, self-sabotaging, pointlessly vicious, and perversely jaunty. It is very much like--deliberately like--theLethal Weaponseries. The Director's Cut makes clear that's not at all what Helgeland had in mind. Kudos to Gibson and Icon for giving Helgeland a chance to restore his film and get it out on this DVD. But a look at both versions (this disc does not include the theatrical cut) back-to-back can certainly make one's head spin. Icon's revisions in the original release show little faith in a contemporary audience's ability to discern much about a story or mood or character from spare but telling details. That film relies on crass swatches of voiceover narration, cute inserts, added scenes, and hipster tunes on the soundtrack. All of that was designed to tell an audience how to feel rather than encourage a cinematic experience encountered with an open heart and mind. Worst of all is a specious third act nakedly built around an obligatory Gibson-gets-tortured sequence, leading the film to a lazy, comforting conclusion. The Director's Cut eschews all of that. Gibson's character, Porter (based on the central character in the novel "The Hunter," written by Donald E. Westlake under the pseudonym Richard Stark), is a man returning from the brink of death with nothing but his identity and the memory of something (an almost-nominal amount of money) taken from him. His iron determination, his capacity for brutality and inducing fear, and his survival instinct make him anything but warm and cuddly. It's his few ties to the past--especially an interrupted relationship with a call girl (Maria Bello)--that humanize him. One doesn't have to like Porter; one just accepts him and follows his journey in an honest, unmitigated fashion. That's exactly what Helgeland does, and his cleaner, leaner, smarter cut is instantly rewarding for its uncompromising, undistracted toughness. Special features include a documentary about the film's history, and a wonderful interview with Westlake.--Tom Keogh Mel Gibson portrays Porter a career criminal bent on revenge after his partners in a street heist pump metal into him and take off with his $70000 cut. Bad move thugs. Because if you plan to double-cross Porter you'd better make sure he's dead. Porter resurfaces wading into a lurid urban underworld of syndicate kingpins cops on the take sniveling informants and deadly gangs. Porter wants his money back. And the way he sets out to get is assures that from beginning to heartpounding end Payback pays off big. True, it is not going to be a movie that most people can get into, but this can be said for most of Tim Burton's films. I would not suggest those who have not seen this movie to buy it, but to rent it first... though I can say that for just about any movie. DO NOT BUY THIS BASED ON 5 STAR REVIEWS - rent it first or buy a cheap used DVD if you must. I've found that most people find this too weird for their taste. Which is expected; not everyone will like the same things. I will say that I am disappointed in the hype that has surrounded this and many other films in the last few years, endorsed by those who have yet to see the film because they "have to". This will lead to many good reviews and many disappointed buyers. remember - rent first. That said, this film is one of my favorites. I have always liked the oddity of Tim Burton's work (with the exception of Sweeney Todd, but I never like that musical anyways) and this is one of his early showcases of said odd work. I loved this movie as a child, and can still watch it and be amused. It is a combination of comedy and drama, ending somewhat tragically. I felt the story was complete, having a strongly defined beginning, middle, and end. A good deal of the styling is obviously that of the late 80's and early 90's, but this can be said for many films of the time. This is also Vincent Price's last movie. This movie never gets old. Johnny's character is so innocent and sweet, you can't help but love him. The whole Tim Burton effect is evident also. It's a win win movie and I'll never grow tired of it. "Edward Scissorhands" comes from the fertile mind of Tim Burton. Telling the story of an outcast learning to be accepted by society and of its dark side, it manages to balance the line between funny and touching without breaking into pathos. The whole cast is strong and it is notable that this was Vincent Price's last film role. This is a film that should be seen more than one time to get all the little nuances and set pieces in it. Do yourself a favor and buy this DVD. i simply adore edward scissor hands. i think that it is a wonderful story that was done very well. i find that all of tim burton's movies have this special quality to them that make them so fascinating to watch. i don't know if it's the acting or setting or just the mood, but what i do know is that this movie is a MUST WATCH, along with other burton stuff too. every person i talk to loves this movie (or doesn't not like anyways). its definitely something to excperience. I highly recommend if you have a blue ray player of some kind that you get this movie with that format. The picture quality is splendid. I notice things now that I've never seen before with the DVD or VHS. It's really that good quality. Now about the movie, not much can be said that hasn't already been said. It's an incredible movie that balances drama, comedy, and tragedy with one of the best movie scores I've ever heard. Complements to Danny Elfman for composing the music. Tim Burton has made one of the most memorable movie characters of all time. I couldn't recommend this movie any higher. You'll laugh, you'll cry (and I'm a 20 year old guy and I still can't hold back my tears) and you WILL want to see this movie again. Once upon a time in a castle high on a hill lived an inventor whose greatest creation was named Edward. Although Edward had an irresistible charm he wasn't quite perfect. The inventor's sudden death left him unfinished with sharp shears of metal for hands. Edward lived alone in the darkness until one day a kind Avon lady took him home to live with her family. And so began Edward's fantastical adventures in a pastel paradise known as Suburbia.System Requirements:Running Time: 105 minutesFormat: BLU-RAY DISC Genre: SCI-FI/FANTASY/FANTASY Rating: PG-13 UPC: 024543435358 Manufacturer No: 2243537 Edward Scissorhandsachieves the nearly impossible feat of capturing the delicate flavor of a fable or fairy tale in a live-action movie. The story follows a young man named Edward (Johnny Depp), who was created by an inventor (Vincent Price, in one of his last roles) who died before he could give the poor creature a pair of human hands. Edward lives alone in a ruined Gothic castle that just happens to be perched above a pastel-colored suburb inhabited by breadwinning husbands and frustrated housewives straight out of the 1950s. One day, Peg (Dianne Wiest), the local Avon lady, comes calling. Finding Edward alone, she kindly invites him to come home with her, where she hopes to help him with his pasty complexion and those nasty nicks he's given himself with his razor-sharp fingers. Soon Edward's skill with topiary sculpture and hair design make him popular in the neighborhood--but the mood turns just as swiftly against the outsider when he starts to feel his own desires, particularly for Peg's daughter Kim (Winona Ryder). Most of director Tim Burton's movies (such asPee Wee's Big Adventure,Beetlejuice,Batman) are visual spectacles with elements of fantasy, butEdward Scissorhandsis more tender and personal than the others. Edward's wild black hair is much like Burton's, suggesting that the character represents the director's own feelings of estrangement and co-option. Johnny Depp, making his first successful leap from TV to film, captures Edward's childlike vulnerability even while his physical posture evokes horror icons like the vampire inNosferatuand the sleepwalker inThe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. All I could think during this movie was what a shame I entertainment has taken such a nose dive since the release of this flick. No cursing, no nudity, no blood and gore. Just a well written, and well acted movie that relied on talent. This movie will haunt you.........as will the Johnny Mercer score. Thank you Gene Tierney. You were just perfect in this! "Laura" is a murder mystery which contains one of the best and most surprising plot twists ever. I don't want to go into any more detail about the plot, as it might spoil it for you. I saw this film for the first time, on late night television, about 20 years ago and have seen it numerous times since. I consider it to be among my favourite films of all time. It is not just the plot twists that makes it a great film, but also the characters and the actors who play them: the arrogant and sarcastic Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), who is one of my family's favourite fictitious characters; and the enigmatic Laura (Gene Tierney) who might not be as nice as she initially appears. "Laura" is based on a book by Vera Caspary, which I also highly recommend. The movie follows the book reasonably closely, but in a number of ways improves on the book. I see the movie as being a darker version of its source material. This is one of the lesser known film noir films, but is by no means lesser in quality or entertainment value. I highly recommend this film to any fans of the noir genre or to fans of mysteries in general. I had seen this movie only once many years ago. I remembered it being a lot more interesting than it is, but it's still a good movie. The picture nobody wanted, Laura was one of Fox's most notorious bad-luck pictures, and some of the bad luck stuck. After all the studio's A-list directors had turned it down (one of whom, John Brahm, ironically went on to remake it as Portrait For Murder in TV's 20th Century Fox Hour), Rouben Mamoulian began the picture until producer Preminger took over, reshooting much of his footage. Even David Raksin's famous theme only came about when Alfred Newman, Bernard Herrmann et al had turned down the picture. The result may well be an acknowledged classic, but while it's good, it's not THAT good. Something is missing. That we are unaware of working-class detective Andrews' infatuation with the dead murder victim Laura until until the venal Waldo Lydecker tells him, despite Andrews fine performance, is indicative of the problems of the film. That we have to be told so much instead of sensing it for ourselves is one of the film's greatest weaknesses. Some of this can be attributed to Darryl F. Zanuck's penchant for over-editing - it takes a while for it to become clear that the victim's face has been shot off - some to rewrites, but regardless of their cause, all play against the film. Structurally, too, it is scarred. The decision to reduce the original three narrators to one either goes too far or mot far enough: as it stands, Waldo's opening narration is soon ignored and later lacks logic. Despite her awe-inspiringly bad taste in hats (she favors the S'Wester look), Gene Tierney is all about the look, not the performance here. While the painting of Laura (in reality a touched up photograph) holds a magical allure, she cannot live up to the eulogies of the supporting cast in the flesh. The real stars of the show are Vincent Price's Southern gigolo and Clifton Webb, great fun in an overwritten part as the patron saint of purple prose Waldo Lydecker that makes the film feel like a Joe Mankiewicz drawing room thriller rather than a noir. Yet for all its weaknesses, Laura is full of good things. There is some brilliant camerawork from Joseph LaShelle, who took over from Mamoulian's choice of Lucien Ballard after filming Webb's screen test (refusing to read for the role, Webb chose to do his Blithe Spirit monologue for the cameras instead!), while David Raksin's theme effectively haunts the detective in its various guises wherever he goes. When the two combine, as in a superb tracking shot that keeps Laura's portrait present in the frame with Andrews as he wanders through her apartment, they become the veritable blood in her veins, creating an impression that no actress could ever live up to. At times the picture even adds up to more than the sum of its parts and it's still a good wallow, but it's one best approached with few expectations if you want to get the most out of it. ***** 1944. Based on Vera Caspary's Laura (Femmes Fatales: Women Write Pulp), LAURA was produced and directed by Otto Preminger. Academy award in the Best Cinematography category and four other nominations. While Det. Lt. Mark McPherson is investigating the murder of Laura Hunt, the young woman suddenly reappears in perfect health. LAURA is a motion picture I watch every five years or so. It's a gem of the film noir genre and it hasn't aged a bit. In my teenage years, I was mostly attracted by Gene Tierney's almost irreal presence on the screen, later it was Dana Andrews's taciturn and low-key performance that stroke me as essential and, yesterday, I finally understood that LAURA's main character was in fact Waldo Lydecker, played by the incredible Clifton Webb; this character literally forges Laura Hunt's personality and provokes, thanks to his suggestive descriptions of Laura Hunt, McPherson's love for the young woman. LAURA is a must if you like the film noir genre or, simply, Cinema. Indispensable. This silky smooth film noir pits gruff police detective Dana Andrews, stiff and blunt in his street-bred manners, against a cultured columnist and acidic wit (Clifton Webb at his prissiest) in a battle of wits during a murder investigation. The cop is a romantic hiding under a hard-boiled exterior who falls in love with the beautiful victim through the portrait that hangs in her apartment. Gene Tierney, whose heart-shaped face mixes the exotic with the girl next door, brings the poise and calm of a model to her role as the object of every man's gaze and the target of a killer.Laura, handsomely shot in dreamy black and white, is the first and best of Otto Preminger's cool, controlled murder mysteries. In the gritty world of film noir it remains the most refined and elegant example of the genre, but under the tasteful decor and high-society fashions lies a world seething in jealousy, passion, blackmail, and murder. Vincent Price costars as a blithe gigolo and David Raksin's lush theme has become a wistful romantic standard.--Sean Axmaker Nominated for five Academy Awards®, this stylish mystery thriller twists and turns with new suspects, new evidence and unexpected revelations. A wealthy journalist (Clifton Webb) becomes entranced with a beautiful young career woman named Laura (Gene Tierney). But shortly before her wedding to a dashing young playboy (Vincent Price), she is found murdered. Stirred by her portrait, the detective (Dana Andrews) assigned to her case finds that he, too, is strangely under Laura's spell. As an original Mario fan who got his brand new Nintendo at age 5 in the '80s, I love the throwbacks to all the previous Mario games. I'm currently halfway through the Super Mario Galaxy game, but I feel I know enough to write a review: Pros: This game has, in a smart way, incorporated many of the cool things from previous 2D Mario games in a 3D setting. We have the return of cool powerups like the fireflower, along with some new ones like ice mario, a bee suit, ghost mario, and some others I probably haven't discovered yet. There are a lot of classic sounds like going down a pipe, or getting a powerup, that go back to the NES days, rather than the SNES Mario world days. Also, a lot of classic music is used, albeit remixed and pepped up a bit. The structure of the game is systematic without being too restricting. The game consists of traveling to different galaxies, which hold 4 or 5 "worlds", each of which have between one and three missions to complete. This allows for a ton of different levels, scenarios, and introductions of new characters and powerups. You don't have to complete anything in a particular order, except once you complete the Bowser world (one in each galaxy), it unlocks a new galaxy to discover next. The diversity of characters, enemies, and bosses is impressive. Usually the world that you're in prepares you to fight the boss at the end. Your powerups are usually world-specific (just like the old games), and are instrumental in completing the missions. Cons: Sometimes the camera angle is tricky. Unfortunately I never owned an N64 or GameCube, so I'm basically new to 3D navigation. Walking around on tiny planets that sometimes have gravity issues makes it no less frustrating to navigate. Instinctively, if you press left on the nunchuk, Mario should walk to his left, but it actually just goes to the left of the screen. That means if the camera suddenly shifts (which it does) while you're moving in one direction, you'll suddenly start moving in another direction after the shift. If Mario gets hit by an enemy, he does this "owowow" thing where he jumps up and runs around like he's on fire. This means if you get hit on a narrow walkway, you might automatically die just by falling off the edge. There may be a way to avoid this, but I haven't found it yet. Some of the cut scenes are long and drawn out, and apparently you can't always skip through them. If you're doing a level where you have to talk to someone at the beginning, it makes you talk to them each time you do it, so if you have to do something 12 times (because you kinda suck like I do), it gets a bit tedious. Overall I think this is a stellar game. Based on reviews I've read about Mario Sunshine, it seems to be a die hard old school fan pleaser in comparison. Lots of nostalgia, lots of diversity, and an extensive world/boss/enemy/situation repertoire that won't easily get old. While the game is clever and original and everything everyone expected in a game stretching the limits of platform gaming, it has two major problems. The first, as many people have mentioned, are the camera angles. Usually, the camera does an amazing job of keeping you and enemies in view, but just as often you cannot tell where you are going and you make a leap of faith, hoping that you don't die. However, you will probably have so many lives that dying won't be a problem. The second, is that the game presents no challenge. Some levels are difficult. Some levels get made difficult with the "Comets" in orbit, changing the rules. However, in this game you are incapable of going the wrong direction as long as you keep moving forward. No matter what direction you take, as long as it isn't back the way you came, you will proceed toward the star. There is no longer any search involved or thought. Most puzzles are simple and straightforward, and you can play most of the levels with very minimal attention. The game is fun for quite a while, but after about 70 stars gathered without effort, interest can be lost. |
